The collapsed of the Soviet Union in 1991 was one of the happiest moment for the United States and its allies as it signifies the end of their hatred for the bi-polar world system. The West could have been more realistic by following the Russians. Instead they keep on efforts to enlarge NATO and began posting troops in the former USSR republics.
As for the Russians they never wanted to accept that the West should dictate world politics as such they spend all their energy on rebuilding what has been destroyed. When one looks at the enormous amount of energy dedicated to re-built the Russian Federation, it was by leaps and bounds. The United States-led NATO never actually sleep in peace. It sees the resurgence of Russia as an important player again within no time. To counter this they began aiding the former Soviet republics through military trainings and arms besides enlarging NATO membership. It was only a matter of time the 'silence' of post-Cold War to take a new turn.
Russia having soundly established it shattered economy in the late 20th century now turns to securing its frontline to the West. But with the US planning to install the missile defecne shield in Poland and other smaller countries the problems in Georgia became the right incident for the Russians to say to the West 'Hey, don't even try to come close to us... we will not tolerate anymore of your piliticking...'
And thus we have what many analysts termed 'The Russian Payback'. Georgia, a rather small and insignificant country, was made the scapegoat, by both the West and Russia. Now both sides have toughten their stand but as of now it seems the Russian will have a final say in the Georgian crisis.
All the three players- The West, Russia and Georgia- are now standing in circle, ready to shoot infront of the mute international community. The winners, whoever be, will have bigger say over the 'treasure'. But unlike the Clint Eastwood movie we will never know who is really the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly in this crisis.
